Abe Akanmu has been one of the most impactful mentors in my career. When I first started teaching at Success Academy, he was the first teacher I shadowed, and I was immediately inspired by how he led his classroom with such confidence and care. As a Black male educator, he set a powerful example of what it looks like to build strong, authentic relationships with students and families. During the two years we worked together, I learned so much from his teaching practices and leadership style. Even as our careers took us in different directions, we stayed connected. When I decided to pursue a Dean role at Achievement First, where Abe had been before, he didn’t hesitate to help me prepare. He walked me through action steps, broke down what to prioritize during observations, and gave me a clear picture of the culture. Abe’s guidance and encouragement made a huge difference for me, and I’m grateful to have had him in my corner. Today I’m a Dean at Achievement First.

I'm Tosin Oyekanmi, and I currently play football professionally. When Abe Akanmu told me he was an athlete when we first met in 2014, I knew he would be able to help me whenever I needed it. I took a different path than most to get to where I am now. Long Island University, junior college, and prep school. Abe got me through everything. While earning my master's degree, I managed to complete a division 1 collegiate career. Abe addressed all of my questions, accompanied me on college trips, and attended football games. Knowing that I had someone who could relate to me as an athlete was comforting. He has also experienced everything that I might in the future. I will always be appreciative of Abe's assistance and direction.

After graduating high school, I questioned whether continuing my basketball career at the collegiate level was best for me. Abe supported me through my decision-making process with access to his network, his deep basketball experience, and his unbiased wisdom beyond the basketball court. First, Abe connected me with the head basketball coach at my school as well as the team's off-season runs. Next, he connected me with a former basketball player in his network who recently pivoted toward his professional goals. Abe also equipped me with the best questions to maximize the opportunity. By exploring both options, I gained confidence in my ability to succeed on and off the court. Ultimately, I decided to pivot away from basketball and pursue professional and creative opportunities during my time in college. Abe helped me see this move not as a failure but as a new beginning. Today I’m the Assistant Vice President of a major financial service company.

Over the years Abe Akanmu has been an incredible mentor and guide, shaping not only my athletic journey but also my personal growth. Since going into high school I remember the guidance he gave me on choosing a school that would help me reach my goals in life. Now I am a sophomore on a full athletic scholarship at a Division I college for football and he has helped me make crucial decisions and taught me the importance of discipline and a strong work ethic of sticking to the plans that I have set for myself to be successful on and off the field. His advice on how to approach the game with focus and determination and confidence has been invaluable and his connections within the sports world have opened doors that I never thought possible. Even now I continue to benefit from his guidance and coaching as I continue my path which keeps me motivated and constantly striving for improvement.
